Finance

Since the early 1980s, the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Band has worked to obtain more autonomy over their financial affairs. During the late 1970s, there was a push by the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Band Council to have more autonomy over their financial budgets and budget control. This push by the Council over the years has led to the implementation of new funding arrangements which has allowed the Band to gain more autonomy.

The Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Band utilized the services of (4) finance clerks, under the direction of the Community Manager/Finance Comptroller, to handle the total annual revenues and expenses. The duties and responsibilities were divided up into the (4) following areas:

  • Accounts Payable
  • Accounts Receivable - Cash receipts
  • Payroll
  • General Accounting - Financial Statements

The finance department relied on an up-to-date computerized accounting system and equipment, that was designed to meet the specific needs of the community, to handle the high volume of daily and weekly transactions encountered in the community.

Due to the increased difficulties for First Nation members to access loans from financial institutions for on-reserve housing, repairs and economic development projects, the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Band has developed an "Economic Development Loan Fund" and a "Revolving Loan Fund" to help community members access funds for the development of their projects.

The Kitigan Zibi Administration offers a "Home Owners Well Insurance Plan" which covers emergency repairs and replacements of defective pumps and accessories for residents of the community. In order for their well to be covered, the well must be inspected and annual fee must be paid at the Kitigan Zibi Administration Office.

In recent years, the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Band Council has invested some Band Funds in the development of major business ventures within the community. In recent years, the Band Council has seen the need to develop major business ventures within the community to ensure a solid economic base for the community members and ensure self -supporting jobs. Without the Band's participation in these ventures, the businesses would not have been able to obtain the necessary financing to develop the projects. The following is a list of some of the major ventures undertaken by the Band in recent years:

  • Construction of the K.Z. Freshmart Store (Building Only - Rental Revenues)
  • Construction of the Rona-Pasahigan Home Centre
