Our Mission

The Kitigan Zibi Wazoson provides an educationally sound program working to ensure the best possible environment to promote physical, cognitive, cultural, social and emotional growth for every child. The program also provides love, security, comfort and understanding. Operation of the centre includes team work and open communication involving staff, parents, guardians and community resources. Our program reflects all aspects of the Anishinabe tradition by promoting the use of our Algonquin language, culturally oriented materials and culturally based programmed activities. "Kakina mâmawe nidondamitâmin kidje ayîjîyâng iyo" (we are all working together to attain this).

What is the program all about?

The program promotes whole child development using "learning through play" activities. Whole child development is the growth of each child's social, physical, intellectual, and emotional abilities in a program that promotes cultural awareness. Cultural Awareness is promoted through activities such as:

  • everyday use of the Algonquin language
  • Kokomis & Mishomis day
  • storytelling
  • nature walks
  • special guests
  • recycling
  • providing culturally oriented material such as medicines, animals, weather, etc.

Seeing that nutrition is a very important part of our program, our menus provide healthy nutritous meals and snacks approved by a dietician.

Weekly programmed activities are planned by trained staff to ensure that all areas for whole child development have been covered.

How to get enrolled in the program?

There are application forms available at the Kitigan Zibi Wazoson for enrollment. If there is no space available in the particular age group(s) for which you are seeking care, your application may be placed on a waiting list until there is an opening(s). A visit to the Kitigan Zibi Wazoson prior to enrollment can be scheduled with the Coordinator.

What about the staff?

The Kitigan Zibi Wazoson staff are First Aid C.P.R. certified. Senior Staff are qualified Early Childhood Educators. Educators for the School Age program are qualified teachers. All staff are subject to police reference checks.

With a strong sense of teamwork and innovative programming, we are dedicated to putting down roots and laying a foundation upon which the children of our community and their families will grow and thrive towards a bright future.

What is the ratio?

The ratio is the number of children per educator:

6 months to 18 months old: 1:4
18 months to 3 yrs. old: 1:6
3 yrs. old to 4 yrs. old: 1:8
preschoolers: 1:10
school-aged children 1:16

In order to maintain high safety standards for children in care, the children are divided into groups according to their age. We currently have a program for:

Infants: 6 to 18 months
Toddler 1: 18 months to 3yrs. old
Toddler 2: 3yrs. old to 4yrs. old
Preschool: 4yrs. old to 5yrs. old
School-age: 5yrs. old to 12yrs. old
